This is my favorite kind of news. Going through this list I had lots of thoughts about the tools. It is of no surprise to me that Milwaukee came out on top. Personally, I love Milwaukee tools. I think that they're high quality, durable, and you get the best bang for your buck. I was surprised that DeWalt got third, because I have little respect for their tools. Their tools will sometimes have lower specs in the same price range as other tools, and I have seen several shops working with DeWalt tools that are actively broken. I was most interested however, by the Flex impact driver. Flex is not a brand I know much about, but I am extremely interested in this impact driver. The article said that it performed best in the trials, but was rated second due to it's weight, which is a tradeoff I'd be willing to live with. I was very intrigued by it's quick eject feature on the handle of the impact driver. If there is one thing I dislike about my impact driver, it's that I have to adjust my grip every time I want to change a bit. A feature like this seems like a game-changer to me, and I really want to try it out. I did see that the light is placed in the battery area though, and personally I prefer a light on the front of the impact where the bit sits. However, with all of it's other features, this may just end up being a tool that I purchase.

Milwaukee is always at the top of these lists and usually the con is price. I’m sure a part of the price is the company’s ability to up charge for the brand name because of their very good reputation. I wonder if all the listed tools could somehow hide their color and brand names and be given to an average carpenter to decide what works best in each category because I feel like brand name has an effect on our pre conceived notions of what is best. I like impact drivers because of how fast it is to sink screws into things and also when there’s a hard to reach area where you can’t get much force behind it yourself. I have the Ryobi impact driver at home because it was on sale the day I decided to go buy one but there are so flipping many to choose from these lists are helpful. In terms of a theatre shop however I feel like the best tools are the ones within the main battery family the shop holds since having different batteries for different tools can become a hassle and practicality issue.

I think it’s pretty fun to read about all these subtle differences between tools that all look the same. It’s no surprise to anyone that Milwaukee is on this list twice; they make good tools and have a good reputation but you certainly have to pay for it. I liked the sound of the smoother trigger on the M18 Fuel 2953 because it can be really frustrating to try to start a screw with a jumpy impact gun. The Flex impact driver caught my eye because of its quick eject feature. In my experience, changing bits on an impact driver can be slow and frustrating, particularly when you’re trying to work fast. Annoyingly, it sometimes takes two hands to get a bit out of a collet. I can already imagine how easy it would be to change bits with this Flex without even having to move your hand from the grip.
