This is so exiting. I hate to say it but I am not a big reader, somewhere in 7th grade I just realized I didnt want to do it anymore. I struggled to read the assignemed books in highschool. But I did love reading the Great Gatsby. I enjoyed the character arcs and symbolic elements used in it. I think it was cool to make them super obvious and readable. I also really liked the narration, the unreliable narration was an interesting factor. I am really curious how this wiuld come out in a theatrical way. Jay would come out even more mysterious. It would be more suspenseful going along for the ride. I could imagine the picturesque scenes of Daisy– a fog could come over the peach lit stage, a dreamy sequence like presenetd in the book. This would be a good way of showing the idealist verison of her. I would love to see all the symbolism come to life.
I have heard a lot about the great Gatsby musical, but I haven’t really heard peoples opinions on it. Personally, I read the great Gatsby when I was a sophomore in high school for my English class and I cannot say that I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty boring and that not that much happened, so I wonder how they made it into a two act musical and if they changed the plot at all. It’s also starring Eva Noblezada as Daisy and I saw her and Hades Town twice. She is so incredible and so talented I’d be really interested to see how she takes on the role of Daisy. I’m really curious to see if the music takes on a 1920s sound and if the choreography does as well, because I think that be really fun. I think the book has a lot of strong imagery that could work well on stage. I don’t think I’ll go see this musical, but maybe I’ll watch recordings that they release of it.
After getting the chance to see The Great Gatsby at Papermill Playhouse, I am just dying to see it on Broadway. While the Papermill playhouse wasn’t perfect and definitely had things to critique, I must say I was utterly charmed by the production. The cast was so fun to watch and it’s thrilling to hear that the two leading performers will be reprising their roles on Broadway! However what I find most interesting about this change will be watching to see what has changed since it was in New Jersey! Some of the songs I remember were such earworms! And there were some lovely standout design moments, such as the garden of the cottage! It was also wonderful to see the blending of scenic design with VMD, and I especially remember some of the visually striking transitions between scenes. But everything from the Lighting, Costumes, Choreography, and the work of the entire team showed such fun promise and charm that I can’t wait to see what changes they have made to continue their work in this show. And then when we get to see the other completely different Gatsby musical in the works??? I can’t wait.
Listen. I kinda hated reading The Great Gatsby. I know, this is SUCH a controversial opinion but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I probably should have. My high school had a few required books all students had to read within their time from freshman to senior year. And personally, there were other books I read and appreciated more. For example, I loved Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, as odd as both of those books were. But honestly, I thought Great Gatsby made more sense as a script than a book. However, my friend went to see the musical when it was stationed at Papermill Playhouse, and she said she absolutely hated it minus the two leads played by Jermey Jordan and Ava Noblezada. I am a HUGE fan of both of these actors, so I’d totally see this in NYC just for them.
