'The Fall Guy' Gets First Stunt Designer Movie Credit

variety.com: The Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America have approved the first-ever credit of “stunt designer.” The title will be used on the upcoming release “The Fall Guy” with veteran stunt coordinator, second unit director and president of Stunts Unlimited Chris O’Hara set to receive the inaugural film credit.

Titles are very important in our world. I don’t know why but for some reason the title someone has is very important to both the opportunities it affords them later but also the pay that they can get while at that job. It’s why a lot of school districts will have 3 to 4 or even more superintendents of different categories that are really just managers of their respective categories but with a pay increase that they wouldn’t have been able to get otherwise. For that reason alone, the addition of the Stunt Designer role opens up room for these stunt designers to start getting designer level paychecks instead of coordinator paychecks which are pretty different. Additionally, being labeled as a designer allows them to have more agency and to be taken more seriously as they will be able to have the position of someone who is contribution to the design of the film.

I am really excited for this Fall Guy movie, CMU Film is hosting an early screening of the movie that I grabbed two tickets to and hope to go soon. I already thought that this movie had such an interesting concept to it as I feel like stunt personnel and fight choreographers go very unknown and unrewarded by the public, and only in recent light have I been hearing and seeing more reference to stunt rehearsals, and people, etc. It is very exciting to see that Stunt Designers are now able to be credited in movies (I understand that the SGA & DGA only specifically approved this movie but hopefully this sets a precedent). They do so much work and handle so much responsibility when creating not only visual and storytelling specific stunts, but also making sure everyone involved is safe. I hope this ushers in an era of more of these people in the industry getting credit where credit is due.
