Student-run Radio Station WRCT Celebrates 75 Years of Music Discovery

News - Carnegie Mellon University: From its home in the Cohon University Center basement, past the post office mailboxes and the silver frozen “Sophomore Faces”, WRCT’s speakers blare the tune of the moment and draw visitors toward windows adorned with album covers, concert flyers and the station’s call letters in large blue serif vinyl letters — except for the R, which is a Sesame Street coloring book page.

Happy anniversary WRTC! How thrilling to have 75 years of such an establishment and safe space for so many students! That is such an accomplishment. Personally, I have not listened to the radio in many years. And I think that’s true for many people nowadays. There’s something about not having control over which music is selected at a radio station, that I think has gone a little out of style. And yet it means we don’t know as much music because it’s harder to explore and discover new Artists. And yet, we enjoy this Algorithm approach to music so often. We know we will enjoy what we are shown. But it is thrilling to know that WRTC Is works to embrace the weirdness of some music, and works to showcase it in a way for new people to discover! Perhaps I can find a way to dial in soon, It might keep me off of my phone for a bit longer if I don’t have to pick the music!
