Theater | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: In a small rehearsal space at a Shadyside school, bodies are veering and staggering from one side of the room to the other, as if being thrown by a strong wind. They fling themselves with abandon, teetering off kilter, hopping from right foot to left. Some have bananas — one, two, or a basketful. And when they reach the conclusion of the passage, the performers are unable to conceal their pure delight in the fun they’re having.

The energy of a rehearsal room at work is unmatched by most settings. It can be one the most productive, open, welcoming spaces in the world. The child-like ability to explore of actors at work in a rehearsal space is one of the greatest reminders we as individuals can have of how we should comport ourselves on a day to day basis. It is so easy for us to become consumed with the day to day difficulties of existing, from finances to work to chores, but this is not the only way we can exist. Instead we should become like an actor in a rehearsal room. Unafraid to be ourselves, willing to explore, and optimistic of what is to come. There is ample opportunity in this world to live with joy and excitement. We must base our attitude and energy in happiness, and there is no greater exemplar of this than in actor in a rehearsal room run by Tome' Cousin. Let actors, in all their glory, remind us one of the greatest ways we can choose to live.

It is so natural for us to become overwhelmed with the day to day difficulties of existing, from having to pay bills, work on a show, or to doing chores, but this isn't the only way we can live. Alternately, we should display ourselves like an actor in a rehearsal room with the energy and spirit they have when getting ready for a show. Not being hesitant to be us, willing to search and investigate, and to be confident of what is to come. Doing that will help us as the views to see what opportunities are in this world. We must have a foundation of our attitude and energy in paradise. Let actors, in all their glory, remind us one of the greatest ways we can choose to live.
I am pleased to hear that this opera was a hit and brought enjoyment to both the audience and the performers. I can remember back when I was a young child watching Mr. Rodgers on PBS and I couldn't get enough of it. I think that it is really great that he was able to put some of his work into an opera.
The past two years I had the pleasure of working with the Pittsburgh Festival Opera (as an electrics intern) also alongside Tomé Cousin as he directed shows that I worked on. Although I worked with him directly or even spoke to him for that matter, it was still a pleasure to see his work come to life. I hope to be able to make time to come back as an audience member to see more of his work not only in this production but into the future.
