Q&A: Live Sound Engineer Jen Watman
Live Design: Jen Watman doesn’t have a lot of downtime. The 34-year-old engineer spends half her time on the road, mixing FOH and monitors for up to several touring acts each year, including Bikini Kill, Dilly Dally, and the Miles Electric Band (FOH) and Anita Baker, Googoosh (monitors); the rest of the time she works as a freelance engineer and sound tech in Los Angeles, mixing dates at clubs and concert venues around town. The common thread? An unshakable work ethic, continual quest for new skills and experiences, and a lifelong commitment to hearing health.

What is it like to be a sound engineer in the professional world? I feel like it’s a tiring environment because you have to work at different venues back and forth. What is your workload on a day to day basis? I am a lighting electrician and my workload consist from 10 to 10 at my school. Is the workload in the professional the same as the workload in high school. I want to be a freelance designer, what is some advice you would give someone who wants to be a freelancer. How do the freelancing progress works, are you hired or do you contact a company? What does common thread mean, does it mean having an idea or theme that is consistently present in several different areas or things. How does the traveling process work when you get the gig at a company. Can you work at any company as a freelance or do you get assigned?
