Trump Says Kennedy Center Will Close for 2-Year Reconstruction Project
The New York Times: President Trump announced Sunday that he would shut down the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which has been battered by cancellations and boycotts, for two years starting this summer. He said that would allow his administration to transform what he called “a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center,” into “the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind.”

The Kennedy Center’s closing is quite a travesty, but not really a shock at this point. Over the past year, the current administration has kept up constant pressure on the center to conform to its agenda, often leading to productions and artists pulling out of the center entirely. As a result, ticket sales and attendance has declined dramatically, both as a result of the audience’s reaction to the Trump administration’s actions, as well as a decrease in performances overall, thus giving the president the perfect excuse to kill the center. Honestly, I hope that this is just a closure and nothing really happens to the Kennedy Center. It would be a great loss if the center was destroyed in its entirety so the administration could paste gold all over the walls. I had the privilege of seeing the National Symphony Orchestra in the Kennedy Center’s concert hall in 2024, and they were simply stunning.
