Inside Ed Sheeran’s World Tour with CAST’s WYSIWYG
LightSoundJournal.com: Lights Control Rigging (LCR) is one of the UK’s most respected lighting rental companies, trusted by globally recognized artists and major event producers alike. Among its most ambitious projects is Ed Sheeran’s monumental world tour, a groundbreaking in-the-round production that redefines how audiences experience live performance.

It is extremely exciting to hear from the Lighting Control Rigging Company from the UK. I love hearing about their detailed process of concert design. Since commercial concerts are really different from theatrical spaces, I would love to learn more about how Cobain Schofield transformed from school stages to large concerts. The use of software tools is currently the trend in the industry since it is easier to make changes and for the director to see the final effects. Hearing from WYSIWYG is a fairly new thing to me, so I will definitely research more on this. The way that designers have to build models and set up pre-effects on their computer due to the limited access to the performance space is the path that I will need to dig deeper into. The complicated rigging systems and the emphasis on lighting design in concert performances make companies that can do customized fabrication and design important. I would love to see more of LCR’s future development in this field.
It’s always interesting to see some insight into how stadium scale tours are designed and realized. The scale of the tours, as well as the artistry involved is always impressive. I have not yet had the chance to see Ed Sheeran in person, but I have seen some other tours on a similar scale, my favorite of which being Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in Atlanta in 2022. The visuals were absolutely astounding, and the synchronization between the band, video design, lighting design, and pyrotechnics was mesmerizing. I have also heard amazing things about Ed Sheeran’s mathematics tour, featured in this article. What is most interesting to me about the tour is the fact that it was staged in the round. The massive lighting, video, and sound apparatus is suspended in the middle of the stadium, and somehow maintains power, data, and most importantly, sightlines. Tours are so often so much more of an artistic and technical marvel than the public realizes.
