Bob the Drag Queen's road to Broadway

Just ask Bob the Drag Queen, the RuPaul’s Drag Race winner who is fulfilling his dream of headlining on the Great White Way. He’s now starring as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical — though his path to playing the “Spectacular, Spectacular” owner of a Parisian cabaret, where a composer falls in love with a courtesan to a soundtrack of modern jukebox hits, was unconventional.

This is super interesting, especially with the announcement of Moulin Rouge closing soon… I am not surprised that they have cast a celebrity cast member during their final season. It's often on Broadway when a show is going to close soon to try to cast a celebrity in order to possibly gain more audience members and maybe save the show. They're doing this with Chicago recently too because I think Chicago has been going downhill for a while now therefore they continuously have celebrities play Roxy to save their ticketing and it's been working because they're still up and running and from what I know, I don't think Chicago is closing anytime soon. I haven't seen RuPaul's drag race, but I have seen the Traitors where Bob the Drag Queen was on and I do think that this part fits very well. I doubt I will be able to see the show in person but I'm sure I will see videos which is very exciting to me.
This article reminds me a lot of the discussions we have been having in production classes recently. Bob the Drag Queen phrases the way he got to Broadway as this secret third route where he almost faked-out the production. However, I think his route was a strategy that is pretty advantageous to a lot of up and coming creatives. In classes, we are told to never pass up an opportunity because it might be just what leads to your next job. It sounds a bit out of the ordinary for other careers, but the connections you build are super important for the trajectory of your career. These discussions feel a bit limited when we mention that it should be the best person to get the job, because there are plenty of amazing people that it might be hard to compare. And also, this is just not realistic. There is not time to interview so many people to find the best, and the best might not even apply to that position.
