Peta calls for pork-free menus as Peppa Pig show rolls into Grimsby

Children's theatre | The Guardian: Campaigners are calling on theatre bosses to stop serving bacon, sausages and ham in their cafes – at least while Peppa Pig and her family are performing in the same building. Grimsby Auditorium in Lincolnshire said this week it would remove pork from the menu when Peppa Pig’s Big Family Show opens next month, after a request from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta UK). The campaign group is sending the venue vegan ham as an alternative.

This is so hilarious. I have many questions. How did PETA even know about this Peppa Pig show? Are they just constantly keeping tabs on shows about animals? How did they zero in on this specific family Peppa Pig production to scrutinize the menu of? Then it gets funnier when you read that PETA is sending vegan ham as an alternative, and then it gets just completely hysterical when you read “all pigs are individuals with personalities and not body parts to be chopped up.” I didn’t even really know that this was PETA’s purview, I also didn’t know that they had such strong opinions about the eating of meat. I knew they wanted to protect animals and stop animal exploitation but I didn’t know they were against eating meat altogether. On a serious note though, this does demonstrate how you really should consider every aspect of your production’s experience, including what happens before and after the show in the lobby and in the theater cafe.

I actually love this oh my god. The fact that PETA got involved is the funniest part of this. It is really not that deep. I also think it would be really funny and ironic to serve pork at these cafes where a Pepa Pig performance is happening. Granted it may traumatize a few children but I think adults would think its so funny. They may not appreciate their kid having a meltdown in the middle of a restaurant though. Also what in the world is vegan ham made out of and what does it actually taste like because there is no way that actually tastes good. I do feel like the production company that is producing this show and the cafe should have thought about this beforehand since their show is about pigs and then at the cafe they could serve pork products and children are the primary audience of the show. Granted many of them may not make the connection but if they do that may be a little bit of a mess.

While I do think it would be a little ironic to serve pork at a peppa pig cafe I really don’t think the situation would be that deep, if a family that already eats pork go to the cafe and doesn’t eat pork there they’ll just eat it the next day instead. I love introducing kids to ethics and important topics but I do think this is a bit of a silly way to do it. I also do love how this wasn’t an issue before peta chose to say something, no one thought about the concept of pork being sold in the cafe being wrong or problematic which I think shows how this really isn’t a huge issue(especially because the cafe will have other animal products from my recollection there are cows in peppa pig as well but I guess that doesn’t matter as much since they’re not the title characters)
