From Broadway to EPCOT: A Theatre Fan’s Guide to Festival of the Arts

Disney Parks Blog: I think everyone has that one childhood moment or memory that made them fall in love with Disney. Mine began with Disney on Broadway. Aladdin was one of the first shows that ignited my lifelong passion for theatre and storytelling, which led me to attend college and live in New York City, work on Broadway, and now be here as part of the Disney Parks Blog team.

I have always found Disney's interest and continuous commitment to theater to be a somewhat unlikely bridge between two different worlds. Theater has previously been advertised as high class or an outing that older generations enjoy and although some of those stereotypes are still true Disney has opened a window of opportunity for young people to enjoy a night out at the theater. Festival of the Arts seems to act as the first step before seeing a full blown production. Kids can sometimes struggle with the ability to sit still throughout a two hour production, condensing down to fun songs and medleys allow them to enjoy the magic in a way that appeals to specifically kids. The Once Upon a Stage exhibit also helps build interest in theater as a whole as it peels the curtain back and lets younger audiences physically engage with things they got to see in the productions such as different costumes and props.

This is awesome! I love theatre and Disney so much, and this is a really cool intersection of the two! This exhibit looks really similar to the Broadway Museum, which I really enjoyed! Disney productions are always amazing, and I think that this is such a great way to showcase some of their theatrical work to a different audience! This did not exist last time I was at EPCOT, and I really wish that I did. Disney should absolutely make this a permanent exhibit! They create magic in the theatre that no other company can do. I have truly never been let down by a Disney show. Every detail is so intentional, and they do such a great job of pulling the audience into their world! One of my favorite musicals of all time period, is Frozen. I saw the broadway tour, and it was amazing. There were SO many elements, but everything still felt extremely cohesive.

Disney on Broadway has been really integral to my development as a backstage worker, I've been interested in the stories they've told and the productions as a whole have always been cool to see since i was a young girl, Aladdin was one of the first shows that I've ever seen and it really set forth my love of musicals and my opinion that musicals is the peak of theatre. My love of musicals combined with my love of classic disney movies meant that disney on broadway was one of my favorite things growing up, i really want to see beauty and the beast as well, if i ever get the opportunity i would love to see it. Exhibitions about theatre are always really cool to see, it gives people the opportunity to learn and observe some really iconic theatre details up close, i think it gives people a greater appreciation for the work that people do backstage to make these musicals as great as they are
