Belgium’s ticket resale ban heads to EU court in challenge that could reshape secondary rules

TicketNews: Belgium’s strict limits on ticket resale are headed for a test at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) after a Brussels court formally decided to send the dispute to Luxembourg — a procedural move that could reverberate well beyond Belgium’s borders.

While this is starting in Belgium, this court case has global ramifications. If one country is seriously delving into the rules and setting a precedent, then the other countries also have to; not necessarily follow the same exact rule that Belgium has set, but set a precedent for their own artistic sphere. The language surrounding the specific rules are slightly vague and confusing, and I wonder if that is intentional. I think it is good that Belgium is trying to protect cultural events and artistic work by cutting down on ticket resales, but that’s going to be a hard thing to catch. In the United States, the scalping is absolutely out of control. Scalpers beat the lines and quickly by large quantities of tickets, and then resell them at ridiculously jacked up prices. This just prohibits prospective audience members from seeing a show or event that they are interested in. Artistic events and their marketing should focus on making events more accessible because art is about creating a shared experience, not about making money.
