Fox West Theatre – Trinidad, Colorado

After the Final Curtain: The Fox West Theatre opened as the West Theatre on March 16, 1908, with a performance of The Bondman. It was built by Ed West, a Trinidad businessman, and designed by local architects I.H. and W.M. Rapp, who were related to the founders of Rapp & Rapp—the firm behind major theaters like the Uptown in Chicago and Kings in Brooklyn.

I read this and immediately got excited because I thought this was in reference to the Aurora Fox theatre; a very small regional venue, but it makes a lot more sense knowing that it’s not. I have never heard anything of the Fox West theatre until now. While living in Colorado, nothing south of Pueblo was really within my scope unless I was planning a road trip. While it’s sad to know such a lovely space isn’t currently being occupied, I have much appreciation for their appearance once again during covid. This is one of many very lovely historic buildings I’ve seen in Colorado that goes unused for an incredible amount of time and I don’t quite understand it, I just hope to see this lovely building go to some kind of use in the near future. If it ends up being torn down to build apartments like everything else there seems to be, that would be a tragedy.
