Fringe: And Her Children. Agitprop for Gun Control
New York Theater: Anna Fierling, the spokesperson for the National Rifle Association who tells her story in “And Her Children,” is a fictional character clearly inspired by former NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch, but merged with the main character (not coincidentally named Anna Fierling too) of Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children.”

I’ve never heard of the play, “And Her Children”, but reading more into the story of it and topics it covers makes me so appreciative of it coming to fruition right now. The main character is inspired by former National Rifle Association’s (NRA) spokesperson, Dana Loesch, and the extent of which her actions demonstrate complicity and enforcement of violent fascist policies. Reading about the themes and inspirations of the fictional main character, Anna Fierling, reminded me so much of The Commander’s wife, Serena Joy, another fictional character from The Handmaid’s tale. Though both characters clearly advocate for different issues on the political spectrum, they’re both examples of how women can become radicalized in advocating against their own self-interests and serve fascist principles. Gun violence spares no one in the same way, or even more so, than how sexism spares no woman. I think these characters are so important in humanizing and depicting their radicalized beliefs and the harm they cause in artistic mediums for us to understand in order to combat.
