The Number of TV Shows Available in the U.S. Fell Again in 2025
www.hollywoodreporter.com: The number of original series running on networks and streaming services in 2025 was down for the third straight year since a high in 2022. According to a year-end report from data firm Luminate, 1,122 shows premiered last year, an 11 percent drop from the 1,266 premieres in 2024. Since hitting a high of 1,695 shows in 2022, per Luminate, the TV landscape (excluding live sports and news programming) has shrunk by a third.

I find this really interesting. Because of the number of streaming services out there now, I would assume that the number of shows being produced would go up due to competition. So I wonder what the reason is for the decreased production. It does make sense that broadcasting networks took the largest hit because of streaming services practically taking over how people get their movies and tv shows. Because of the tax on film production in California, I wonder how this will affect the number this year, and if any services will relocate to another state or country for filming. I also wonder if this production decrease is due to the increasing cost in general. I read an article last week about how film companies can’t hire anyone because they don’t have enough money to staff them. I wonder if the production numbers last year had to do with that. The idea of the foreign shows pulling the weight for some services is something I want to look into more.
It is really said to see the decrease in television shows in the current year, television is one of the best entertainment mediums and is the one I find myself the most interested in because of the variety of what comes out year after year. While there are still quality tv shows coming out all the time i have noticed a slight decrease in the shows coming out ever since 2024 i do think this in part to modern shows usually taking a lot longer to film then shows in the past(despite a lot of them having way fewer episodes. It was also interesting to see that broadcast shows were being affected the most, I don't know if its because i no longer have cable but i havent really thought about the fact that cable creates some really good television that less people will immediately consume do to the fact that cable has become less popular due to the presence of streaming services( i do know a couple of cable channels do have their own streaming services but i think those aren't as popular as the streaming juggernauts- netflix, hbo, hulu and disney+)
