The Gerber Pocket Cleaver Could Be the EDC Tool You Actually Use

www.popularmechanics.com: Like most EDC enthusiasts, I have a lot of pocket knives that look quite similar (but I promise, I have a reason for owning each). I’m a sucker for the sleek, minimalist design of most pocket knives because they make for excellent compact carry. However, they can all start to look the same after a while. It gets harder to break through the noise of super steels, anodized handles, and shrinking multitools.

When reading this article, I cant help but ask what is so different about this pocket cleaver from just a regular pocket knife. The main point that the author brings up in it's difference is the weight, with the cleaver coming in at 5.6 ounces it certainly has a presence. However, there are still heavier blades out there. What I was hoping to see more about in this article is the particular shape of the pocket cleaver. The most unique thing about this knife is its shape, more rectangular all around as opposed to tapering down to a point, and I was curious to see what advantages that would bring. While the article does mention that it could be used as a pry bar, I have to wonder what knife really couldn't. Additionally, I wish they had done some testing about the chopping ability of this knife. Most pocket knives are built to slice, but I was interested to see how this one would handle a chop given it's resemblance to a real cleaver.

This is an interesting article. I for one have not seen a pocket clever, and in fact I don't think I have ever seen a pocket knife that doesn't come to a point at its furthest reaching edge. The main issue I see with using a pocket clever as a pocket knife is that people may use the bottom pointed corner as the tip of a regular pocket knife. This depending on the construction of the blade may lead to the point chipping over time if it wasn't meant for being the leading cutting edge. Despite all of this though I really like the idea of having a pocket cleaver simply because it looks cool, and is something that I would want to have. Seeing this pocket cleaver makes me want to do some research and see what other differently shaped pocket knifes are out there. I wonder if the pocket cleaver will be the least differently shaped pocket knife out there, or if the pocket cleaver is more unique than I realize.
