Equity Report: More Contracts for People of Color, Less for Women

AMERICAN THEATRE: On April 9, Actors’ Equity Association published its fifth Hiring Bias and Wage Gap in Theatre Report, documenting employment opportunities and average salaries for actors and stage managers working on Equity contracts across the country in 2022 and 2023. As with previous years, the report found that the industry is making gradual progress towards diversity and equity in union jobs for stage managers and actors. It is available in standard and higher accessibility editions.

Reading about reports such as these inspire me that change is possible within the theater industry to increase the diversity in our industry and ensure that there is equitable opportunities and compensation for those involved. In particular, the fact that this is an ongoing report and always aimed at informing employers who look towards equity actors and stage managers is incredibly helpful and exactly the intention that will eventually bring the change that we have been looking for. One aspect that drew my attention what the detail surrounding new hires at small professional theaters and less involved LORTs having less BIPOC contracts signed in the recent period in that this may raise particular questions about where progress is being made and if it may only be happening where we see it, whereas at more local and less visible theaters the same progress may not be made. More analysis into the potential disparities at the level of theater happening would be an interesting expansion of these reports.
