‘I always thought it would be amazing to be the first person to play a role’: Ewan McGregor on his return to the UK stage

Theatre | The Guardian: In September last year, it was announced that Ewan McGregor, the 54-year-old Scottish actor, had been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The news item happened to pop up on the feed of Michael Grandage, the theatre director who worked with McGregor in the mid-2000s on two productions, Guys and Dolls and Othello, both under the Donmar Warehouse umbrella.

Occasionally I’ll come across an article mentioning that a famous actor is being praised for some play or musical, or that they will be starring in one in the future. Most of the time I wasn’t aware that these actors had been in a live theater production before, whether on Broadway or the West End. It always seems surreal that people like Robert Downey Jr, Ewan McGregor, and Daniel Radcliffe, who are famous for their film franchise roles, don’t get similar acclaim for their onstage roles. For me, I think it highlights the severe discrepancy in popularity and public awareness between the film and theater worlds. Unless it is a ridiculously famous theater production, such as Hamilton or Wicked, most people probably don’t know that actors were in Broadway or West End productions. As such, I didn’t know that Ewan McGregor had starred in London stage productions over the last two decades.
