Simply what the fuck. Sorry but like. What the fuck guys. Public media is important. Public anything is important. Are we about to ban libraries next? We are footsteps away from burning books. And its all simply not funny anymore it's devastating. Now i'm not the biggest fan on NPR, but i do find it important and crucial as a public news outlet but also as a storytelling outlet. From my experience NPR focuses on facts and stories about real people and their real experiences, i couldnt fathom an ounce of harm they have caused. But also I'm young and really dont know much. But its so sad to see efforts of getting it ripped away coming to fruition. Its all just a part of the dictatorship we are going into. I hope people’s eyes will open. And i hope they realize that none of this is normal or okay or smart or good.
While incredibly disappointing to hear and not surprising in the least, this act represents yet another attack on free speech and freedom of the press. It remains increasingly concerning how Donald Trump attempts to silence critics, force media to change their speech (see: AP News getting their press access revoked for a period of time for refusing to say anything other than the Gulf of Mexico), and ultimately garner fear from these organizations in any way possible to prevent them from getting in his way. What is most upsetting about these attacks is the deep value these programs play for so many people, especially those who are learning and trying to be informed about the world. NPR is constantly a source of deep understanding of topics and PBS a platform to create great informative entertainment. Not only do these plans serve to empower himself, they act as clear and decisive attempts to undermine the American people, their education, and their future success.
This is incredibly heartbreaking to see, especially in the modern age since public media has had an important role in society for multiple decades and still has a lot to offer in the current year. In comparison to all the good it does, 1 billion dollars is not a lot of money. The person behind all this also gives perspective on why this is so bad trump isn’t doing just just so that he can save money for the American people(if he was he would’ve took billions from the defense budget) he’s doing this so that he can control the media and make sure that no one ever says anything bad about him or the Republican Party, to silence voices against him and his ideals. I can’t imagine anything that npr or pbs could’ve done to deserve this cut while other harmful companies continue with their exploitative practices against normal people
