TCG’s New Survey of Nonprofit Governing Boards Is First in 10 Years

AMERICAN THEATRE: Today Theatre Communications Group (TCG) released In Whom We Trust VI: Governing Boards Survey 2024, the organization’s sixth comprehensive study of nonprofit theatre governance, and their first in over 10 years. Since 1998, TCG (which is also the publisher of American Theatre) has periodically conducted a survey exploring theatre governing boards in depth. In Whom We Trust provides a wide range of comparative data broken down by budget size to inform the evaluation of giving levels, give/get requirements, board demographics, meeting practices, recruitment policies, and more.

I have been following TCG a lot recently and attending some of their workshops. I think they are doing good work and getting important information and voices out especially with everything going on right now. I really do not understand what governing boards do for theatres. Like I have a somewhat vague idea and I have had to interact with them on a few occasions but mostly it is a mystery to me and something I would like to learn more about. What stood out to me in this article was the overwhelming positive tone the article and data had. This is something that I think TCG is doing well. Every article I have read and every discussion I have joined has had a lot in it that is focused on the good. Or at the minimum what is not as bad as we think it is. It is always to see good data, things are getting more diverse, conversations are more productive, and relationships are being ranked well during a time where the president of the US just made himself chairman of a board. Things are not good but there is still positive out there.
