Review Roundup: Broadway-Bound REGENCY GIRLS Opens at The Old Globe

www.broadwayworld.com: The Old Globe is currently presenting the pre-Broadway engagement of the world premiere of Regency Girls. This raucous and daring new musical comedy features a book by Emmy-winning writers Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan, music by three-time Emmy-nominated composer Curtis Moore, and lyrics by two-time Tony and Grammy nominee Amanda Green. Josh Rhodes directs and choreographs this riotous adventure of love, rebellion, autonomy, and self-discovery.

When Bridgerton came out in 2020, the Regency period received an immediate revival that it had never before seen. Suddenly, “Regency Core” was all the rage and empire waist dresses, puff sleeves, pearl jewelry, and pastel color palettes gained a huge boost in popularity. When I started reading about “Regency Girls” at the Old Globe in San Diego, I couldn’t help but wonder—was the timing a coincidence, or was this period musical comedy about a group of Regency women on a road trip inspired by the series? I’ve always wondered how musicals were able to “capitalize” on trends. Regency Core may have been popular in 2020, but in the time it has taken for the musical to be written, pitched, workshopped, rehearsed, and finally open in 2025, much of the craze surrounding it has subsided. How can producers stay topical and keep up with the current trends when it takes so little time for them to change? Either way, Regency Girls seems like an exciting new musical and I hope it receives a Broadway transfer in the coming years.
