Musical theater's beloved show 'The Last Five Years' finally makes it to Broadway

www.thestar.com/entertainment/stage: Nick Jonas was only 9 and portraying a teacup on Broadway when he first heard about a buzzy new musical playing way downtown. “All my adult castmates were talking about how great the show was and how amazing the music was,” Jonas recalls of his days in “Beauty and the Beast.” “I went to the record store with my dad and picked up a copy of the cast recording and really fell in love with it.”

I didn’t realize that the first production of this show was off-broadway since it had such a life within the theater circles and community I just assumed it was a broadway show. I really enjoy this musical, it has some beautiful songs and is a very interesting look into relationships and time in a dynamic way. I think the history of it is fascinating considering it had some legal issues with the composer's ex-wife thinking it was too identifiable of their own relationship. I also think it is fascinating since most people are on Cathy’s side in the show rather than Jamie’s. Nick Jonas was an interesting choice to play this role, I really hope for his success but I worry that perhaps his voice isn’t strong enough to last the 8 shows a week with such a difficult vocal part. Others who have played this role have been the likes of Jeremy Jordan and Jonathan Bailey who are known for their theatre stamina and vocal ability.
