The fight to save an Aspinwall mural raises questions about public art on private property
Visual Art | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: In 2014, then-18-year-old artist MK Noonan and her father ate dinner at the Aspinwall restaurant Luke and Mike's Frontporch Grille. Noonan's dad had become a regular at this restaurant and introduced his artist daughter to co-owner Sheri Rice. The encounter led to Noonan creating a mural on the restaurant's facade.

I found MK Noonan's mural to be such an interesting glimpse into the amazing work public art can do in an area. I was so fascinated by the fact that the mural was created with input from Aspinwall residents, and families contributed their own handprints to the painting! It made me really realize how public art can create and become a communal element, and it can completely come together as something that allows various people to participate! I'm interested in how the article noted the complexity of public art on private property. I had never really thought about how difficult this was for artists trying to protect their work, particularly without a formal contract! I can sympathize with Noonan here, as balancing my sense of artistic vision with a viable way to proceed with agreements can be so important. Plus, I think it's great that Noonan's understanding of art and contracts has evolved in the process. It is important now more than ever for artists to have control over their own work.
