The Right Track: The Journey Of Apprentice Live Audio Technician Catherine Bowdidge

ProSoundWeb: I recently had the pleasure of welcoming Catherine Bowdidge to join me on the road with British music royalty Take That for her first ever tour. Our equipment and crew were supplied by Skan, who are now part of Clair Global, along with Britannia Row.

Reading this article was super reassuring because I feel like generally there are so little spots and so many people who want the same job and it is so hard to have rejection after rejection and not give up so hearing that someone else also had to face a lot of adversity but they still continued and succeeded gives me a lot of hope for my future in this field. I will say that now with the state of the world, these job prospects are also dwindling by the minute but I think looking at job markets in other countries such as the UK might be a completely different world for me. I feel like it’s also nice because the sound world has so many different careers and paths such as going into the touring industry or the music industry or composing. This article was honestly super fun to read and it just goes to show how important connections and networking is in our world.

Getting employed in the theater industry is weird. I don't think I’ve ever heard a story of “they were hiring and I applied”. It’s always about knowing the right people and working your way up. I think this can be very discouraging for some but you don’t go into theater for job security haha. I kind of love it because it shows how important it is to be a valuable team member and worker, and also to be kind and build relationships. As mentioned in the article, it’s important to have a good work ethic and show that you’re committed. If you are a person who is reliable and someone who people want to work with, that’s how you’re going to get people coming to you to ask you to work for them on this other production they’re working on. It was interesting to read about this person's experience. Especially because she is not much older than I am. In a few years I could be on the same path as her!
