I've tried to watch The Last 5 Years a couple times, but even I get confused by the plot line. I started to catch on that the story of their relationship was being told in reverse orders, but this article is the first time I've heard it explained fully. I've mixed thoughts about pop stars having leads in musicals. Some of them put in the work and do really well and others it feels like you're at a rock concert rather than a theater. For example, Ariana Grande as Glinda in Wicked. I was really scared it would feel like she was playing herself rather than this iconic character. But to my shock she did spectacularly, putting in the work to truly make the character come to life. I wonder if a similar issue is happening with Nick jonas. Either it doesn't feel like he's embodying the character or our skepticisms are seeping through because he is a popstar, or any mix of the two.

OH MY GOODNESS. Over the weekend I saw The Last Five Years and let me just say, these reviews were not exaggerating. This is the first time I’ve ever seen any production of The Last Five Years and I was so disappointed that this was my first impression because from what I’ve heard, the previous productions have been so much better. This production was a great concept album. I enjoyed the musical score a lot but I had zero attachment to the characters and the storyline. The show had to give a card with the timeline of the numbers on it and without that card I would have been a lot more confused about the storyline and what in the world was going on. Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren are amazing talents by themselves, but put them in a room together and they just make each other look bad. They have zero chemistry and with a musical full of intimate ballades, every moment and beat just fell flat. Nick Jonas’ pop voice worked great for his character but it clashes so much with Adrienne Warren’s Broadway sound. The lighting design was great and I think that this production had a great concept, just a horrible and confusing execution.
