OpenAI’s Sora text-to-video generator will be publicly available later this year

The Verge: You’ll soon get to try out OpenAI’s buzzy text-to-video generator for yourself. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati says Sora will be available “this year” and that it “could be a few months.”

Wow. I don’t quite know how to feel about this. The technology is incredible that they are able to do this, but as artists have been discussing for quite some time now, it could affect many filmmakers and peoples livelihoods. I hope it is only used as a tool, and not to replace these artists. I’m a bit worried it will affect designers as if a director or someone sees these generated scenes and wants their show to then look like it, that could not only be putting a designer out of work or make them less creative (as the ai is now doing the work) but it could be unintentionally violating copyright of another artist’s work, as they didn’t admit where their data feed is coming from. I took a class on AI and art last semester, and we read a lot about artists who are now using AI as their medium, saying feeding it data and prompts is a whole other line of creative thinking, and that’s how they are now being artists. This is quite interesting, but I do think we should preserve the lanes and possibilities for artists who still want to practice “conventional creativity” instead of using AI.
