This is the first time I have ever heard about these gift bags for Oscar Nominees. I had no idea that they even did such a thing, but it seems like such a nice idea so that everyone can take away something from the night. Being a nominee for the Oscars is an incredible accomplishment, so I’m glad everyone gets something even if they don’t win. However, these gift bags are way more extravagant than I could have ever imagined. Multiple vacations in one gift bag is crazy. Also, I could not believe that most recipients don’t ever even cash on the vacations. I guess they all are extremely busy and already most likely have the money to afford all of these vacations, but I feel like that is such a waste. But it seems like only a select few of the nominations get these for the bigger awards, and the rest get a smaller gift bag with no vacations, which I think is quite unfortunate. If the bigger award nominees don’t even use their vacations, why not give them to the rest of the nominees? I’m sure they would gladly take them.
This is insane. I had no idea these gift bags existed and it might just be me but it seems a little over the top. Like I know it is the Oscars and the celebrities there are high end but they are also celebrities with millions of dollars, and now they are being given even more things worth so much money. I am all for celebrating people who accomplished incredible things but I don't know if gifting six figure gift bags to all the nominees is totally necessary or a good idea. But with all of that being said, if I was an oscar nominee I would not be upset if I was given one of these bags and it would definitely be helpful if I were to lose the award. I just think it is so flashy and over the top but that is Hollywood it tends to be the norm now.
I had heard about the Oscars gift bag a few years back through some Vogue or Vanity Life video on youtube. It is obvious that this gift basket is an influencer's dream and a publicity stunt advertising the products in the gift basket to the general public. Although not mentioned in the article I had heard that despite the large price tag the gift baskets are not as costly as the announced price tag as the Oscars only pay for the cost of the trips and experiences if a recipient cashes the trips in. I did not know that the bag is no longer affiliated with the Oscars officially but Fary has taken their place. I am glad this article mentioned the logistical nightmare of getting the gift baskets to every winner which is something I had not considered when thinking about this gift basket in the past. This publicity stunt is definitely a staple of the Oscars in my mind.
It says that the giftbags aren’t associated with the Academy Awards, but if so then who organizes and pays for them? I assume some of the companies that participate are simply hoping for future free product sponsorship that could up their profits if huge celebrities like their products. The idea of gift bags is cute and sweet, but them being six figures seems insane. I know that Hollywood likes to act like a completely different world, but wouldn’t it be acceptable to just have a “yay I was nominated for the oscars” sticker or something? I don’t know why they need to spend so so much money on these lavish gifts. I find it more interesting though reading what products are included, how it ranges from skincare (which makes me think of society's beauty standards, but maybe it’s just nice skincare and not a suggestion about anything) to vacations and home remodeling. I wonder how these companies express interest in being a part of the gift bags, and how they are chosen.
