Morpholio has updated its Trace app to pair with RoomPlan
www.archpaper.com: Gone are the days when architects needed to rely on tape measures, or even laser scanning devices, to take measurements of a space and create a digital 3D model. A leapfrog came in June 2022 when Apple unveiled RoomPlan, an expansion to its ARKit 2.0 augmented reality feature for iPhones and iPads that uses the camera and LiDAR scanner to create a 3D version of a room.

I have a bit of experience with developing applications and tools to utilize LIDAR, including my own room scanning application that’s very far from perfect. One of the hardest technical achievements with this is to accurately track where the phone is in space, as the accelerometer and gyroscope, after you perform a double integral, has a severe reduction in the precision of the data, so this company must’ve sprinkled a bit of magic machine learning stardust to accurately track the phone’s position in space. I can see this being extremely useful in small venues to quickly get a floorplan into autocad, but I’m not sure how well it would be suited to getting a floor plan of a larger theater. ETC makes a similar app, that allows one to use vr to automatically focus and select light for focusing using an AR app. I think there's a lot of applications for this technology in a theater space, particularly in lighting design and scenic design.
If this combination works, it will make the lives of so many architects, interior designers, engineers, scenic and lighting designers and countless others easier. While I do not have much experience personally with these tools, I am fascinated by them. The ability to take a camera on a phone and create an interactive model is amazing. However, I do wonder about its accuracy, I know some who have used apps like this and have had trouble with the accuracy of it. Although the ability to draw directly on the model and control natural lighting is amazing and something I would love to play with myself. I believe this tool will either be the greatest thing or it will cause a ton of problems due to a lack of accuracy.
