First of all, congratulations to the producers of WPXI for unionizing! Unions are vital in this industry to protect from the long history of labor exploitation that has happened in entertainment. This reminded me of both an article and conversation from last week about the VICE editors' push for their own union. In both of these cases, the on-screen talent has been unionized much longer than the editors and post-production people in these companies. Whether it is because of on-screen talent’s visibility or something else I don’t know, but I find this pattern to be surprising because of how much we as production people are asked to work. Another reason I find this a little strange is because of how much popularity unions seem to have among us. The WPXI producers had 80% of them sign on to the unionization petition, so I wonder why this didn’t happen earlier. Nonetheless, I’m glad they are finally on the path to a union!
