I wonder how Broadway (and other regional theatres) will go about things from now on. Every year, there is this “call to normalcy”, which to be honest I think is a really naive and stupid sentiment. There will not be a quick “normal”. Our rush to open things as quickly and soon as possible has left us in this mess of opening and closing. How many shows have been sacrificed for this cycle? Truly big shows, such as Wicked, Hamilton, and Waitress have taken a hit, but those shows that are not “holiday-friendly”, why did they even open? While I know why I meant this question as to why were are still investing and forcing open shows that are not going to do well. We know who the audience is. How many families are going to be like “Merry Christmas kids! Let's go watch Girl From the North Country to celebrate this festive occasion”. These are all amazing shows, but they look like they are being set up to fail. Yes, covid makes a big impact on these factors, but additionally, I think its this impatience and politics are why these shows fail as they just open.
