National Deaf High School Theatre Fest Bows in Utah

AMERICAN THEATRE: Back in the summer of 2020, the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Sunshine 2.0 partnered for the first National Deaf High School Theatre Festival, an educational theatrical competition for young Deaf actors, that was entirely virtual due to COVID safety protocols.

This sounds like a really cool theatre festival. It is one of the only ones that I have heard of that originated during the pandemic, so it will be very interesting to see how they adapt to an in person structure rather than the usual vice versa. I am also so happy to find out about Sunshine 2.0 and about the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. They both seem like amazing organizations and I am so glad that they are creating a space for the d/Deaf community to create art through theatre. It is a much needed addition to the current industry and I am so glad that there is a space for young Deaf actors to discover a passion. That group of young people could then drive the apparent need for a larger place at the table for Deaf professionals in the theatre industry. I truly hope that this high school festival is the beginning of a bigger change, but until then I hope the festival itself is wildly successful and that the kids all have a good time.
