I’ve seen the live production of The Lion King once several years ago, and I remember being mostly impressed by the costume and scenic design of the show. As mentioned in the article, puppetry is a crucial part of the costumes that bring this Disney classic to life. I’ve never really seen any other musical or theater production implement puppetry to this extent, but it does an excellent job especially with a show that focuses on non human characters. The puppet head pieces also creates more opportunities for other unique designs, such as a flow of tears being shown as a string of beads from the eyes. I do wonder what the dramaturgy and historical and cultural research of these costumes looked like when the show was in development; it is mentioned that there obviously must be African influence, but it would be interesting to have the article go more in depth about that.
