One thing I need to work on as someone who would like to exist as a well-informed and educated artist in the world is to gain a better and stronger knowledge of other artists out in the world. I know a few directors, a few set designers, a few lighting designers, but no sound or costume designers. However, I could name a million actors. I find it frustrating that actors are so heavily publicized in comparison to other creatives on the team. It pushes the narrative that actors are the most important parts of a production and that even works for them. This is something Ruth E. Carter touches upon briefly, this idea that people just few costume designers as people who work behind the scenes for the actors. She asserts that she works for herself, and for the costumes. I loved to hear this, as she is breaking from the narrative that actors are at the top of the pyramid when in reality costumes are JUST as important as them. I appreciate this article for exposing me to a new artist, and I am very excited to research more of her work.
