Cirque du Soleil plans a new and hybrid Las Vegas show

WRAL.com: Cirque du Soleil is planning a brand new, eye-popping show on the Las Vegas Strip this spring that appropriately flips its typical script. “Mad Apple” will feature stand-up comedians, close-up magic and a live band playing pop music onstage alongside Cirque's famous acrobats in a new hybrid form of live entertainment.

I think that this hybrid show is definitely a choice that I am unsure how I feel about yet. I don’t think all shows have to be this grand piece of art with all this deep and rooted meaning. I actually like the fact that the producer says that it really is just for entertainment. Not everyone who wants to see something in a theatre wants to think, things can be fun. And like the producer also suggested it rolls multiple shows, which would be multiple tickets and time into just one thing, which can be positive. But I also don’t see too much of a correlation between all the different aspects of the show. One aspect that I think will really emphasize the grandeur of Cirque is the live band, I think any of their shows would be amazing with live music. I also think that the idea of making it a Studio 54 vibe is really cool. Studio 54 is just such a cool part of New York’s history.

The entertainment world seems to be going crazy with this new Cirque du Soleil production. Marking its reemergence from bankruptcy from the COVID-19 pandemic, the new owners have described said no-show as “a giant party, the greatest night out in New York.” In a draft, the creative team has opted to create an immersive environment, stressing the party scene idea. Greeted by magicians, members of the audience walk in to find a massive bar that then transforms into a stage as the show begins. The actual performance is that of an acrobatic, comedic, magic, live band production. And just like Bunny, I am not entirely sure how I feel about the production. To me, it kinda seems like a jukebox Cirque cabaret. I mean, the production does feature live renditions of songs by Billy Joel and Lady Gaga. I simply feel like it might be a bit all over the place and not be received by the audience as a unified, fleshed-out production.

I’m very sad to see Zumanity go as I wanted to see it last time I was in Vegas but couldn’t, and now that it’s closed I’m worried I’ll never see it. This replacement show sounds like it’s targeting a very different audience and that it’s more family-friendly, which was the one thing making bringing big crowds slightly more difficult with Zumanity. It’s relieving to know there will still be plenty of acrobatic tricks; I love the comedy elements in Cirque shows, such as the giant baby in Mystere, but I think they work best when they are brought in as a breather between stunts. Hopefully there is plenty of crowd work and audience interaction with the magicians before the show starts, as well as during the show. The idea of a mixture between acrobatics and magic is very exciting, and sounds unique even to Cirque’s lineup. Hopefully the show attracts a big crowd and Vegas nightlife is able to bounce back to its previous level eventually.

Whenever Cirque du Soleil comes out with a new show, I am always very interested in reading about it and even watching it. This new show “Mad Apple” sounds like it strays from the normal recipe of a Cirque show, but also still retains most of the core fundamentals. It is not a Cirque show without the insane acrobatics, and this show thankfully does not omit that. It is a little dismaying to see that Zumanity will be the show vacating its place at the New York New York hotel for this new production, as I know that to be an incredible Cirque classic as well. While not quite fitting the traditional mold of a Cirque du Soleil production, it does sound like “Mad Apple” will be a very entertaining experience regardless. Close up magic? Stand up comedians? Cirque du Soleil-level acrobatics? It really is a production that will draw a lot of eyes.
