How 'Pam and Tommy' Costume Designer Recreated Iconic Looks

Variety: Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” has set the internet alight as viewers tune in each week to see Lily James and Sebastian Stan take on the wild antics of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Not only are audiences talking about the amazing transformations, but they’re also buzzing about the costumes, or in some scenes, the lack of.

Honestly, the printed thongs are some of my favorite costume pieces in this show. Tommy Lee is a really wild character and at a certain point you get used to seeing him strut around his mansion in nothing but a thong, so having those attention-grabbing patterns and colors was great for keeping his look interesting. I am curious as to how they chose to attach his nipple rings and other piercings, whether they used prosthetics or used cosmetic glue. The attention to detail in the sourcing of the Baywatch swimsuit is crucial because of how iconic that costume is; it’s also so simple that any small discrepancy will stand out and be distracting to Baywatch fans who are sure to be watching Pam and Tommy. This article discusses just a few of the great costumes in the series, it’s a very well-designed and produced show and I would recommend it even if you’re not familiar with the real events.

I havent watched this show but I’m seriously considering it after reading this article. I think when costume designers are trying to match a very specific, iconic look from recent memory, they have a huge challenge. The Baywatch swimsuit design is so ingrained in the public consciousness that it needed to be exactly correct in order to keep the audience’s attention and not create dissonance between the memory and what is on screen. I like that the designer broke down the piece and also found the same source of the original costume to capture the look. Both skills are so central to creating a faithful replication. In regards to looks that are not as specific, I think the attention to the designer as well as the cut is so important. The designer looked into the biggest names that Anderson wore and looked for legitimate vintage pieces from those designers to create the exact look that Anderson would have worn. I also like the ability of the designer to make informed decisions to ALTER those vintage pieces. I like that the designer found that vintage piece and decided to shorten it to make it fit even more than it did as a piece from the exact period and designer Anderson was wearing it.

Firstly, Pam and Tommy is such a fantastic show. I did not realize it took so much effort to find a swimsuit. I automatically thought one would just go to whoever was in costumes for Baywatch and talk to them, or that there would be an extra swimsuit from the show around that they would be able to match the fabric, color, and cut to. I find it really interesting to learn as well that so much for this show was sourced rather than made. I would be fascinated to learn what the budget is for Pam and Tommy, it must be crazy. I also had no idea the actor playing Tommy was wearing a breastplate. I definitely knew Lily James was, but that's really interesting. It must be really uncomfortable to wear so many prosthetics. I’m also curious about the shortening of the dress, and if Pam would have bought it that short or gotten it shortened herself.
