Disneyland Announces Return Dates for Nighttime Shows

www.themeparkinsider.com: Disney had announced earlier that its Disneyland Forever fireworks, Main Street Electrical Parade, Fantasmic, and World of Color shows would return to the resort this year, following their pandemic closures. But we did not have specific dates until now.

This article explained what shows will be returning to Disneyland following a halt during the pandemic. I found this interesting because as someone who doesn’t often stay for the nighttime show when going to Disney, I didn’t realize them returning would be such news. I wonder how this return applies to the other Disney theme parks such as the one in Orlando Florida and what factors contributed to the order in which they returned. Although I have experience as a stage manager mainly in a theatrical setting, I have always wondered about the theme park industry and how operations may differ from mine. This is something I hope to learn in the future as I gain more knowledge and experience in other fields. This article also mentions that they will be including new units in these shows and I wonder if that was something that this break due to covid allowed them to do, or if it would have been just as easy to integrate them in between night performances. One positive I have noticed from Covid in many disciplines is the opportunity for improvements or updates that need to be made to systems or designs to be more functional and exciting.

This article honestly made my day. I grew up around the Disneyland area so I would visit the parks at minimum twice a year up until COVID happened. This feels like a step towards going fully functional again which is a great sign. I also appreciate how they took this time to remodel their floats and rethink their parade. Since Disneyland is one of those 24/7, 7 days a week kinds of places I can only imagine how much of a headache scheduling remodels, maintenance, and refurbishments must be. Like many other companies, Disney took the time during the pandemic to do some major changes (some way worse than others but that’s an entirely different conversation), but for better or worse things have changed. The theme park industry is something I am very much interested in, so getting a look into that always feels interesting to me. I admire how they took COVID as a silver lining and something to use to their advantage in spite of the downsides of it.

It's interesting to see the overlap between Broadway and Disneyland in terms of the concerns of opening or closing shows. To me, the fact that the Main Street Electrical Parade and Disneyland Forever are only set to run for a limited time shows a new awareness from Disneyland that they might be seeing tourism decline after the summer ends. It reminds me of Broadway because of an article I read a couple weeks ago about some Broadway shows taking a hiatus until the summer. Honestly, I think it's somewhat of a smart development, especially for Disney. For those who are already at the parks, I believe these nighttime events are free to attend, and so there's little loss of revenue via offering them for a limited time only. Sure, maybe it does mean that fans of these events are less likely to return to the park later in the year, but it also means that they'd be more likely to attend frequently in the on-season instead.
