‘Peacemaker’ Production Designer Shares Exclusive Sketches From James Gunn’s HBO Max Hit

www.forbes.com: Production designer Lisa Soper can’t say enough positive things about her experience on the set of Peacemaker, a small screen spinoff of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. “We were allowed to flex our creativity as far as it would go and were pushed even further into something where we had to work together to make it work and discover things with each other as human beings, as creative individuals, and through the story,” she told me during a recent Zoom conversation.

Recently, I have decided I want to pursue Set Design as my concentration at CMU. Originally, I wanted to go into stage management but kept the possibility of switching into another area of interest open as an option. Except for one area, set design. I hated it. I had designed three sets before, with one actually being used in a production, but found that I hated the process. I could come up with the ideas, but I couldn't translate them onto a page. Because of this, I thought the art form wasn't for me. Then, I came to CMU and learned drafting and proper rendering skills. And now I love it again! I was able to work through my previous frustration, and now I cannot imagine declaring anything else. Because I am still learning about the set design process, I love to look at other designers' sketches. Drawing and fine art skills are the areas I believe I have to grow in the most. I am planning on taking some school of art classes next year to help me in this pursuit of refining my skills.

I think that it is so cool what a little bit of liberty and crearivey can do. I want to become a set designer, and I think that having the freedom to build the types of worlds you want to see are so important to the creative process. Honestly, I am not a big fan of the Marvel movies, however, I do agree that these companies can allow their designers to be really creative because they have such a good budget. I feel that other things, liek the costumes can also become the set, creating an environment on the stage that is most personal to the character itself. So much can be told about the inner world of a character through their clothes, and I find it very similar to what I feel set design is meant to do in a theatre. I am glad that set designers are having a space to show off their work, because I feel like it is often something that is often overlooked because of the notion that sets can simple.
