Stephen Sondheim’s Lasting Wisdom

The New Yorker: Toward the end of his life, Stephen Sondheim—who died on November 26, 2021, of cardiovascular disease, at the age of ninety-one—sat for a number of interviews with me. The idea was that I would publish a Profile of him timed to the première of a new musical that he was writing with David Ives based on Luis Buñuel’s films “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel.”

This was a beautiful article to read. The interview gives so much insight into the life and mind of Sondheim, an absolute giant in our industry. The insight into how he created musicals and how he created his life work is absolutely stunning. The interview itself was also really well written. It seemed to flow so naturally from interview to conversation that it seemed almost like I was sitting in the room watching the conversation flow. I didn't know much about Sondheim and his life prior to reading this article, although it is impossible to avoid his name and creations. The description he give about how he created his works was beautiful and the story he told about works he never got to finish and had to scrap was heartbreaking. I wish so much that this was a video interview because I would probably watch it on repeat in order to soak up all of the genius.
