I am not always a fan of taking a movie and turning it into a Broadway show, but this seems like a good choice. It can be difficult for an actor to take on a character originated in an iconic way in a film and make it their own. However, with adaptations of older films, the director and designers need to be aware of themes of prejudice. As the article mentions, Hitchcock’s portrayal of female characters and his treatment of female actors wasn’t good.
I love how video and media design has helped make previously impossible or expensive concepts, like the crop duster, a reality. I can’t help but feel a little disappointed though because doing the impossible is something that makes live theater magical. Elphaba flying in Wicked, the helicopter in Miss Saigon, the chandler in Phantom, the magic carpet in Aladdin are iconic instances where the audience is left with a sense of awe and wonder.
