What It Took for Warren Carlyle to Teach Hugh Jackman to Tap Dance in The Music Man
Dance Magazine: Teaching Hugh Jackman how to tap dance was a gift Warren Carlyle never knew he needed in the pandemic. Three mornings a week, the two would get COVID tested, wear masks and practice in a rented studio space that only they held the key to.

This interview was so much fun. I really enjoyed hearing about the process of creating this show for this specific cast. The added tap number is so special to this production of The Music Man. I think it is the perfect addition to this show and that it will be so much fun to watch. I have also loved following along with Hugh Jackman's recent theatrical stints. They always look like so much fun and as he is a screen actor I love, it would be amazing to see him on the stage as well. I hope that I can find the time (and money) to get out and see a show of this production. It will be absolutely so much fun to see if the tap dancing is something that gets carried through to future productions. If people see this revival and absolutely love the dancing it will be interesting to see if it gets carried through to other shows in the future.
The fact that someone can learn tap in that short of a period of time is absolutely incredible to me. Especially as an adult. Everyone says it is easier to learn things as a kid and I’m not sure if it is true but I can’t imagine how much effort and perseverance and sheer physical strength it must have taken to learn how to tap dance for Broadway in such a short time. I took ballet when I was little and all I wanted to do was get on pointe. I went 3 days a week for two hours and it took three or four years I think (honestly I don’t remember). I recognize that he is doing this everyday for multiple hours but still. Additionally and slightly off topic but Hugh Jackman is one of those people I think everyone associates with Wolverine and movies. Ever since the Greatest Showman I’ve started to think about him more musically and that's so incredible that he's been able to break into that.
