Sights and sounds from Life Is Beautiful's 2021 Las Vegas return

Las Vegas Weekly: The Look of LIB After so many months of quarantine isolation, it was a revelation to see actual crowds. Thanks to the comfort of knowing every Life Is Beautiful attendee had either been vaccinated or recently COVID-negative, it was easy to forget that a worldwide pandemic had ever put the fun on hold. Still, it felt weird to see so many people together at once, like walking out of a dark bar into the midday sunlight.

It is incredibly exciting to see performing arts events return to the world everywhere. About halfway through the pandemic, I became very pessimistic on my opinions regarding the return of live arts culture. I always knew in some capacity theatre and dance would most likely return, but I felt completely lost when it came to live music. This is mostly due to the close proximity of audience members. In most theatres, there are designated seats that audience's are restricted to, making it easier to space where people are as you can simply remove the option of certain seats in the room. In music shows however, specifically with younger audiences, the crowd is usually standing shoulder to shoulder. Mosh pits are also a big part of this culture. Because of this, I had no idea how or when music events would return. Hearing the so far success of these performances is reliving, and makes me optimistic towards an overall return to some sense of normality in the near future.

I love the hope for the future that is so clear in just the name of Life Is Beautiful. As much as I am still and will forever be a cynic I have really come to appreciate these types of art festivals. There is so much life and joy and excitement. It makes me feel like maybe the world isn’t going to end. Like maybe there is something worth fighting for, something worth being hopeful about. Additionally, on a less philosophical note, I have found myself using this article as music recommendations. I know a few of these bands/ artists but not all. And knowing the kind of energy they wanted to bring to the festival and knowing those other bands it makes me way more likely to check out the people I have not heard of before. Beautifully human is the best way I can describe this festival. Because if there is one thing that humans have consistently had through all of time, through the good and the bad, is hope for the future, hope for a better life, a more beautiful life.

Its interesting to see that so many of the articles on the Blog this week are about Las Vegas and the recent advances in the entertainment scene there. I have always known that Las Vegas was a great place for theatre technicians to work because of its fast pace and endless job opportunities but seeing all of the articles involving the city this week have really opened my eyes to all the feats in technology and design that are happening over there. When I think of a place where such high-end advancements would be happening Vegas definitely does not come to my at first, but its awesome to see that so many exciting and innovative experiences and advancements are happening over there. Perhaps the fact that almost anything can happen in Vegas is what gives designers and engineers the confidence and tools to go all out in their designs and executions.
