I am shocked that there was not an accessible ramp to the stage before this year. That is incredibly disappointing. I completely agree with LeBrecht that going backstage or having microphone brought to someone’s seat is othering them and not right when all the other winners will be able to get to the stage in front of everyone. Not having the ramp in the first place is very telling of who the producers of this event suspected would be winning awards. Not providing this ramp shows that the only bodies that “are supposed” to win an Emmy are bodies that can walk up stairs to the stage, and anyone outside of that description is an outsider. I think accessibility should be the standard and all bodies and people should feel welcome and wanted at events. Award shows not being accessible is showing disabled people that they are not thought of as people who win awards which should be and unacceptable message to be sending, but yet this is the 73rd Emmys and the first time there will be a ramp to the stage. Which is a huge shame.
