Byron Studios Development to Expand Stage Capacity in Australia

Variety: Australia has been so successful in attracting overseas films and international streaming series that the country has deprived it of available sound stages.

I always find it interesting to learn about what locations around the United States and the world become hubs of production. In the US, you mostly hear about Los Angeles, with Hollywood, New York, and Atlanta. Vancouver is big, England has some major studios and backlots, and now it seems like Australia will be the next big “hub.” With Marvel and other big-name studios having filmed successful, major motion pictures in Australia, it would seems that Australia’s reputation has already been well established in the filmmaking world. It makes sense, too – Australia is a huge mass of land with a lot of varied terrain and environments, as well as lots of open and unincorporated space. With all this open space to build studios and also just to have a variety of natural environments in a relatively close radius, it is easy to see why Australia is becoming a film hub. I have been to Australia once, though I was much too young to remember the majority of the trip. I would love to someday go back, and potentially even work on films there.

It’s cool to read about the conception of these projects and the reasons behind the expansion of film to more overseas venues. I liked the section in the article about the fundraising for these projects. Everyone forgets about all the work that goes on behind the scenes. I think that being in the backstage side of the entertainment industry keeps my attention pointed towards understanding the work that goes on to produce big flashy projects. Anyway, I am straying a little from the article at hand. I have been obsessed with Australia over the past year, so I am loving the overseas content to read. Personally, I don’t see myself ending up in film, I have never been very interested in it, but it is nice to see that industry growing to more international venues. I had somewhat heard about Marvels move to Australian film stages which I thought was pretty cool but I am not as up to date with current movies or TV shows that are currently out. I have thought about looking into film and television more, I am interested in moving back to Atlanta at some point in my life and they aper to have a booming film industry.

I always really enjoy hearing about film industries in other countries, and don’t particularly know much about Australia’s. It’s such a shame that their non-big-budget films and shows are being pushed out of the space by cinema giants such as Fox and Marvel. This brings up a point that I believe Martin Scorsese made about the dangers of companies like Marvel; not only do they take spaces away for filming locations, but also take seats away in movie theaters from smaller movies that desperately are trying to recoup. I’m personally a Marvel fan so I can see both sides of the argument, which is why I am grateful that more studio space is being constructed for smaller budget movies. It’s not too often that you find compromise or sharing in Hollywood, or whatever Australia’s version of Hollywood is, so this story has really given me hope for the future of the film industry.
