I remember seeing the #WeMakeEvents hashtag trending all over social media, with my friends sharing photos of them doing what they love, which just so happens to also be their job. This slogan is really well thought out even though it seems simple on the surface. Events and entertainment just seem to 'happen' if you don't understand how a crew works. Putting photos up links faces (which are often hidden or just unnoticed) with the announcement of "Hey, you know all those events you love to go to? People like me helped make them happen." I like the direct nature, and it's proven to be highly effective at helping raise so much money for the industry and the people within it. Additionally, I've seen a lot of quotes like the one in this article claiming that "live events are not only important, but crucial to society" circulating when the pandemic defined 'essential workers.' I wouldn't put arts workers in the same category as doctors (just such widely different professions), but I wish we didn't have to keep reminding people that we serve a purpose.

#WeMakeEvents was a campaign designed to amplify the voices of the live events supply chain, often an invisible cog that manifests in the grand event itself. They have raised £500,000 through efforts spread over the last 18 months, supporting charities which have helped industry professionals through the pandemic--specifically, Backup. 80% of the funds raised have gone directly to Backup, who specifically supports those in the technical entertainment industry in times of sickness or financial need. They in turn also funnel funds to other organizations, which each provide specially designed services to further support members of the industry. The #WeMakeEvents campaign has really shed a light on the situation that the majority of those in the theatre and entertainment industries face--the majority of us work behind the scenes, unseen. To see an organization that makes us more unseen succeed to this degree, not only in a performative sense but in a material, financial sense as well bodes well for the industry.
