I usually just use a pen and paper to write notes, or occasionally use my laptop, but I definitely see the advantages that come with using a smart pen. If I’m writing with a pen I often end up scribbling out mistakes, and in using a pencil my notes end up smudged. Both of these issues cause my notes to be more difficult to read and could be solved with a pen that turns my paper notes into digital files. The Neo Smartpen looks just like a thin Sharpie, which seems nice to write with, and the fact that it doesn’t come with audio recording doesn’t bother me as much because my phone already has an audio recording feature. While using the Apple pencil with the iPad is great because all your notes are already digitized, I wouldn’t choose this option as it is way out of my budget, and I don’t think I would use the iPad for anything else.
As mentioned in this article, there are numerous ways to “digitalize” note taking. When I think of the words “smart pen” I think of the pen I use to write on my I pad digitally, however, I learned in this article that there are actual pens that you can use on real paper that share some of the same qualities. For me, I like how with either avenue, I can access my notes from an app in my phone and don’t always need to go get my notebook if I need information quickly, but one downside to using smart pens on paper is that it is not environmentally friendly. One of the reasons I love writing on a digital platform is that I am not wasting notebook after notebook for each course each semester. In the theatre industry, this same idea applies. As a stage manager, I went through so many copies of scripts, one being for blocking, another being a rough draft for cues, etc.. Going through this process for each production adds up a lot of paper and ink. This process influences me to want to digitalize everything, so I am not wasting as much paper. I believe sustainability is always a factor to consider and using smart pens on a tablet is a step closer to making theatre more eco-friendly.
