Chizu Nara | Your Interviews
Women in Lighting: My name is Chizu Nara. I'm a lighting designer and the co-founder of New Light Pottery, which I started with my husband.
My major was economics at university, although I was interested in architecture in high school. I didn't have enough background to apply for the architecture faculty, so I couldn't choose what I wanted at that time.

I tend to have this little nagging thought in the back of my mind when I read about why or primarily how people end up in theatre. It's that little worry that I went or am going down the wrong path. But, in reality I am very privileged to be on the path I am and there is validity in any positive way to approach it. It also reminds me of the sheer chance and the power of connection that can play such a huge role in the way people get jobs for theater, especially when for example white people are more likely to be comfortable with other white people which contributes to lack of representation in theatre employment. Another thing that struck me was the talk of never being satisfied with one's work. I largely understood that feeling. I think my question for myself is, is that sustainable? Why is it that I am never totally happy with my work? Is it consistently failing to produce work of quality or unrealistic expectations?
