IATSE now has the support of the ICG, DGA, SAG-AFTRA and International Union of Teamsters & Writers Guild of America. It seems almost as if the entire entertainment industry is backing the quality of life that IATSE’s members are asking for, almost. At this point I’m not sure what choice the Producers have when it comes to negations. If they don’t pull it together and concede, if you will, there will be a “nationwide shutdown of TV and film production.” Honesty that seems pretty crazy to me. I am glad that I am not currently under that amount of pressure. The changes that entertainment industry needs are quite drastic but they are changes that would have been less consequential if they had been made along the way. I am so happy that people are fighting for a better quality of life so hopefully, when I get into the professional industry, I won’t have to.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the IATSE strike recently, especially after the TOny’s were it wasn’t mentioned once. I’m glad to see the sibling unions supporting their strike, however it hurts to see this strike sort of swept under the table in the larger world. For example, I’ve seen no media coverage despite the union’s heartbreaking demands for basic human rights in the workplace. However, it does make sense that this strike would go under the radar as stagehands and the other workers represented by IATSE are often the most overlooked members of the theater and film industry, lowest in the already unfair hierarchy of the unions. I think the the unions supporting IATSE, including the cinematographer’s guild owe a tangible sort of support for IATSE, not just their word. I hope that the strike is successful and I hope it helps to break down the pyramid of theatrical unions.
