I had originally planned on watching the Emmy Awards this past weekend with some housemates, but I was swamped with work and totally forgot about it. I did, however, get a very succinct rundown from my housemate's sister, which was "It was okay. The Crown won everything." Good for The Crown, I suppose. I have never watched that show and the only thing I know about it is that Gillian Anderson played Margaret Thatcher. I actually do not think I watched most of the things on the Emmys short list this year. I've been meaning to watch The Handmaid's Tale and Pose, but have yet to actually start either. I tried one episode of the Mandalorian but could not get into it. The only shows on the list this year that I have watched through are Hamilton, WandaVision, and The Queen's Gambit, which are all quite good in my opinion.
I would argue that the Emmys were quite boring this year. Category sweeps for the Crown and Ted Lasso and even the nominations had little diversity. I believe that the Emmys could be bringing more diverse shows to the table overall. Considering not a single BIPOC individual walked away with an award I think the committee should look where they stand. I only tuned into the Emmys to see if William H. Macy was able to snag an award for his outstanding work as Frank on Shameless. Unfortunately, he got beat out by Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso in Ted Lasso. I do find it quite funny that Hamilton won for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) that makes absolutely no sense to me but good for them. All in all the Emmys were largely uneventful this year. And in a world with a cry for diversity, you would think that there would be a stronger pull to answer that call. I hope that in the future the Emmys are used to create a platform for successful BIPOC TV series.
