One Strategy For Creating Dance During a Pandemic? Digital Now, Live Later

Dance Magazine: Each time Pacific Northwest Ballet artistic director Peter Boal called choreographer Jessica Lang last year, he worried that she would slam down the phone. If Lang had chosen to abandon her commission to create an onstage ballet during the pandemic, he says, he wouldn't have blamed her.

I remember reading another article about dance performances a few weeks ago, and I still think that dance is one of the hardest medium to be shown through the screen. That made the work ethic of Jessica Lang, embracing the problem and making it as another concept, more commendable. And honestly, I do not know if they intended this or not, but deciding to use silhouettes and shadows as a major component is also very smart of them, because it looks way less awkward to see through the screen, compared to the normal dances unless it is accompanied by the very delicate camera moving. I was a little surprised and disappointed, however, when I realized that they did not include any photos of the shadow-involved performance shots. Still, I was glad that they included descriptions about how they worked from the rehearsals on screen to the actual interaction between the bodies on the stage.
