I have recently learned a lot more about how speakers work through class and workshops. I attended a Martin audio workshop earlier in the semester and learned a lot about how manufacturers optimize their speakers for certain spaces and the technology used to give the most control to the users. I have seen and worked with a few of JBL’ speakers and from what I know they are good, reliable speakers. I would love to know more about their Digital Directivity Synthesis technology. I have learned a little about how beam shaping works physically, and think learning more about how its done digitally for these speakers would be very useful knowledge to have. I think these speakers have great application concerts and narrow placements. With both analog and digital inputs, it would be a very useful and versatile speaker to have in stock. I’m excited to keep learning more about JBL speakers and how they make them.
It is so exciting to see how quickly and to the extent that technology is advancing in the theatre world. This product especially seems like it was a well thought through design made especially for the theatre. With tailored coverage areas and minimal reflection, it makes the sound design process so much easier, especially in older venues that were not designed with sound in mind. While the actual speaker design is definitely very cool, it is the other aspects that I am more intrigued about. The speaker is also designed to be easy to install and is available in custom colors. This goes back to preserving architectural integrity, which is especially important when working in historic or just older buildings. The most fascinating part, however, is the custom color availability. This ties back to something one of our classmates said about including sound fixtures in the design. Oftentimes they are just big, ugly black boxes that detract from the overall layout, but if they were incorporated into the set it would truly add to a higher production value.
